There are so many things I like about interior design, but I think if I had to pick why it’s my passion in life it probably comes down to the moment when a client says they love how they feel in their home after we’ve worked together.  The project could be a paint color consultation to space planning to adding accessories or re-doing the entire space.  No matter how big or small the project is it comes down to this moment for me.

Often times it’s helping a client add and/or highlight sentimental piece(s) in a space that makes the room feel like home.  In a lot of instances many of my clients have the ingredients and/or the right ideas for their space to rise to the occasion, but just need someone to reign in the vision or give that boast of confidence.     It reminds me of the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy realizes that she had the power the entire time to go home.   Okay….am I comparing myself to the Fairy Godmother who tells Dorothy about the three clicks of the ruby slippers?   Ahhh….moving on from my dream world.

Certainly, in Siona’s space there are new elements in the room that I just love…the inspiration vase (of course), the fabric, the rug, the artwork, lamps, mirror, the dresser etc…and yes, (although not new…which makes it even better) my first born son’s bronze wrought iron crib….However, I would have never predicted that my mom’s childhood small wooden chair that she and her sister sat on together while playing with their doll house would complete  the room for me, but it does.

Ever since I was a little I remember wanting that chair especially if I had a girl of my own.  Just recently the chair made it’s way from Detroit (my hometown) to Chicago and placed in Siona’s space.  There’s a little nook of a space as you enter her room and it fits perfectly.  The chair’s paint color of pale yellow is chipped away, but I LOVE it.  Most of all I love envisioning Siona sitting on it  playing with her doll house someday.   A part of me wants to re-paint it, but for now I’m just enjoying it ‘as is’ and heck I may even it keep ‘as is’.

Many of you may have read in my last blog post a quote from interior designer,Axel Vervoordt who said,  ”to keep the best of the old and search for interactions with the new.”  I love this quote because it’s such a great illustration for life.  For me, this means to appreciate, learn from and respect my foundation created from my history, my roots, my ancestry.  It reminds me to cherish old friendships and simply slow down and enjoy what I have.  However, it also tells me to embrace change, the future and challenge myself to try new things.  It’s reminding me to be smart enough and bold enough to know the importance to mix the ‘old’ with the new with grace.  For me, this life revelation translates to interior design and the ‘old’ wooden chair from my mother encompasses this for Siona’s space completely.

On that note, it seems befitting that this will be my last OFFICIAL post in the Siona’s Space blog series. Certainly,  I will continue to share unofficial posts to the Siona’s Space blog series as we have updates to the room to share (for example, I still need a ceiling light (geez!), something to hang above the wooden chair…to name a few…), but I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey as much as I have.   Thank you for riding the Siona Space ride with me and I look forward to new adventures with you.
