Inspirational Color Combinations

Happy Friday!   It’s been a few crazy weeks for me, but super creative and exciting as well.   New projects have been secured, existing projects keep evolving and potential new projects are on the horizon!   I hope to share with you some of these creative adventures in the upcoming months.

What I’ve learned about doing your passion is that you’re thinking about it all the time, but actually enjoying it.  I’m constantly taking notes, reading and learning about new design approaches, materials, new accessories, furniture, wallpaper, fabrics, paint colors…it goes on and on.  And you know what? It doesn’t even feel like work.

For you midwesterners, you know it’s been freak’in freezing outside this week.  So, I started reminiscing about our family time in Florida over the holidays by perusing our vacation photos and I came across this photo of my daughter.  (I know I have it in the feature photo above, but had to include her gold shoes. I have slight obsession with photographs and also, lately I’m obsessed with adding gold into a design space.)

This picture is taken pool side.  Of course, I think Siona looks adorable (I’m not biased whatsoever).  I especially love her positioning on the chaise (in the cabana mind you) and her facial expression.  While admiring my daughter I have to be honest what really caught my eye were the color combinations….the shades of green in mint, teal, turquoise paired with the pop of red from the pocketbook was so refreshing to me especially in the depths of winter time.  Speaking about never turning ‘work’ off…..immediately I catalogued this photo in my inspiration files.  I really would love to incorporate this color combination into a design some day for someone…heck, maybe even myself.

So, what do I like about this color combination?  Well, for me, it has a sense of sophistication without being taken so seriously.  It’s refreshing!  It’s approachable, yet elegant.  Subdued, but unexpected.  It can evolve with time by just adding different accent colors to change things up and/or create a different mood.   Examples of accent colors  other than red that could work could be pink and orange for the extra ‘pop’/fun side or navy blue and/or gray to heighten the sense of sophistication.  In addition, I’m a fan of having one color in a space, but then layering different shades of the one color either with accessories, the ceiling, furniture/fabrics etc….. Tip for layering shades:  Pick a focal color on a paint color sample strip and then incorporate each tone on the paint sample strip into the room.

Do you like this color combination? Why or why not?  What color combinations are you drawn to lately?   Share a comment…I love hearing what’s on my readers’ minds and learning from all of you.

Until next time…

~M

Here’s some inspirational rooms with the shades of greens we’ve been discussing (notice the gold chandelier in the first pic?   You’ll see some more gold/bronze accents throughout these pictures.  Love it!  Obsessed. )

I love these and also learn so much about design and myself from reading your blog!! I think for me – when I look at the pictures – I’m drawn more to the styles, fabrics and shapes, than the colors. My favorite combo is that teal/turquoisy color paired with the bright red or coral. But I really like the room with the green shag blanket on the white bed. So shabby chic – I know you’re not surprised. Thanks for sharing and brightening and dreary winter/spring day. ;)
